With our rough plan to set our new garden railway somewhere in the slate-quarrying country in the Top-Left Corner of Wales, slate wagons were going to be an absolute must-have.
Lots of manufacturers make slate wagons, but these rather lovely kits by Timpdon Works caught our eye at the Llangollen Show. Lots of bits and pieces.
What looked like quite a complicated design on paper, turned out to be a rather mindful and calming build to complete, adding the rails and spacers.
Painting in acrylics; but it was pretty clear the wagons were going to be too light.
The slate loads were made -somewhat laboriously- from trimmed-down plastic sheet, textured on one face (we had a load leftover from a prior project). When we come to do this as a proper, long train, a better and quicker method will be needed...
Still, they add a lot of weight, which is handy.
OK, these are metal-framed wagons, but I dug this old shot out whilst looking for something else and this seemed a perfect excuse to pop it on the blog.
