Expanding on the vertical-boiler locomotive idea, the battery train-set version whilst showing the concept was perhaps a bit steroid-fired, so I wanted to try something a bit more based on the real-world UK prototypes. DeWinton, of Caernarfon, North Wales, built a wide selection of vertical-boiler locomotives (nicknamed "Coffee Pots"), and in a slightly loose sense this has been the inspiration for this design.
The starting point was this Triang 'Big Big' diesel shunter, as I had it lying around the bits box, and I liked the look of the chassis.
I stayed late at work a couple of nights, and made the most of their laser cutter and some of the mass of scrap MDF lying around the workshop...
Details were the usual mix of model kit odds and ends, scraps of fabric, string, and do on. Painting was a very rudimentary black spray, followed by dusting of browns, then some dry brushing.
I'm wasn't bothering with the usual Pro or Con business, as I really loved this design right from the off, the only problem being the railway track angle. But then, what if it was combined with the Steam Tank idea? Hmmm...
